Mobile phones are taking over!

Did you know that about three quarters of the world’s population now has access to a mobile phone? This is according to a new study from the World Bank.

The number of mobile phone subscriptions has exploded over the past 12 years. Fewer than 1 billion mobile subscriptions were active in 2000, compared to today there are now six billion subscriptions active . Can you believe last year alone, mobile users downloaded more than 30 billion apps?

 Today the vast majority of mobile subscriptions (5 billion) are in developing countries. This is a sign of mobile technology’s importance in countries which haven’t gone through the process of building land-based communications infrastructure.

 Mobile communications offer endless opportunities. Think about what is now available, access to health information to making cash payments online, job creation and running your own home based business.

Smartphones and wireless data packages are still pretty pricey. With the current state of the economy they are out of the reach of most people.
